Below are five initial schematics we came up with for this first round. A few are based on used shipping containers, which are a viable option for the project in terms of cost and material re-use. One is based on re-using the trailers that currently hold Recycle-a-Bike's part and bike storage while we are in transit with our space.

Container + Canopy

Two containers spaced out with a canopy structure covering both of the containers and enclosing the space between them.

Folding Containers

This idea came from paper models - folding out the sides of two containers to form a roof to cover the space between them. In assessing this one, we came to the conclusion that folding shipping containers is quite a bit more costly and difficult than folding chipboard.

Modular Wood Frame

This one is based on four modular units that are not yet tied to any material in particular, but possibly could be wood framed. This option allows for easy phasing of construction - starting with two units and later expanding into four after we get more visibility and hopefully funding.

Trailer Re-use

Incorporating the trailers that Recycle-a-Bike currently uses to hold their stock bikes and parts while in transit with the space. Getting up to the elevation of the floor of the trailers was a challenge, but this option would obviously be easy to relocate or disassemble.

Workyard

This one accounts for the seasonal shift in storage versus workspace requirements (more workspace in the summer / more storage in the winter). The thermal envelope is only half of the structure - the other (with the pitched roof) is non-insulated storage in the winter and flexible as additional workspace in the summer.
